The Fellow Carter Wide Mug is the BEST Mug I DON’T USE (Long-Term Review)

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

The Carter Wide Mug (previously called the Carter Everywhere Mug) is one of the best travel mugs for the office, in your home, and on the go. While its main downside is the inability to use it while driving, it is still a fantastic mug and is by far the best coffee mug in terms of aesthetics.

Why should you trust me? I have used and owned the Carter Wide Mug (it was called the Everywhere Mug back then) since early 2020. Combine this with regularly reviewing products on this website since 2017, and I have learned how to put products through their paces to help you make the right decisions. Who is Carter Wide Mug for?

However, this coffee mug is unsuitable for those needing a travel mug while driving. It lacks the one-handed operation required to stay safe on the road. It would be best to look elsewhere for a mug that suits driving better (although you will sacrifice the water-tight build for it).

How did I test the Carter Wide Mug?

I have been using this coffee mug for years and have rotated it out with my other travel mugs whenever I need a cup of joe while I am out and about. This has effectively tested all of its features, including its leakproof design, build quality, and aesthetics, and even tested it in the dishwasher (Fellow Product does not recommend this).

What is the design of the Wide Mug like?

The Carter Wide Mug offers a unique take on the coffee mug market! While most companies do their best to emulate Yeti and their tapered style mug, Fellow Products has opted for a softer, more aesthetically pleasing direction.

I have had people comment on this coffee mug more often than others, and some even mistaken it for a speaker. It also resembles the cylindrical version of the Mac Pro built between 2013 and 2019, which is meant as a compliment.

How is this product different from its competitors?

The Carter Wide Mug is one of the few travel mugs that focuses more on the taste and feel of drinking coffee rather than the travel aspect of the mug. With a thin lip, and wide mouth, it feels like you are drinking from a premium coffee mug at home, yet you are on the go.

The ceramic interior builds on this aspect by giving you the strength of a stainless steel coffee mug but the taste of a ceramic mug everyone enjoys. This is rare for coffee mugs.

What did I like about this mug?

1. Well-thought-out mouth

The Wide Mug from Fellow Products completely rethought what we want from a travel mug. Rather than offering a small hole to drink your coffee through, or a complicated lid, they want you to remove the cover and drink straight from the mouth of it.

The mouth is wide, and the inside tapers inwards. This means you can still drink from a wide mouth, while you do not have to worry about coffee spilling out around your mouth.

2. Drinkable Thin Lip

Building on the last point above, the thin lip deserves its section. In contrast, most stainless steel travel mugs have an extremely thick lip, the Wide Mug curves inwards at the top to give a thin lip that curves outwards. That support for your bottom lip on the mug is incredibly comfortable and gives you a premium feel.

Most mugs out there have a much thicker rim. Even wider if you are going with a travel mug. This cuts that down and makes it comfortable and easy to drink from.

3. Leakproof Seal

The leakproof seal on this mug works as advertised, with no leaks, no matter what. So many to-go mugs out there are drip resistant or the like.

From what I can find, this mug stands up to it and is leakproof. You can shake it and keep it on its side (or upside down in a bag) without problems. You can go right with this one if you need something leakproof.

This mug is perfect if you commute to work on a bus or in a taxi (or Uber) and need to take coffee with you. While other mugs like Yeti, Klean Kanteen, and Hydro Flask offer fantastic coffee mugs, these high-end mug companies can only provide this quality while still being leakproof.

4. True Taste Ceramic Coating

There are many people out there that can taste the difference between coffee out of a ceramic mug and out of a stainless steel coffee mug. While I cannot tell the difference, this feature is built for those who can. Only so many mugs combine travel convenience with a ceramic interior, so pay attention to this one.

5. Keeping coffee hot with double wall vacuum

The heat lock double wall vacuum works incredibly well, in my findings.

Once you seal the lid onto this to-go mug, it keeps in that heat. The mug holds coffee hot far longer than anyone probably needs it to be.

Having this capability can have its upsides and downsides, though. If you don’t cool the coffee with milk or creamer beforehand, you may need to leave the lid off to get it to drinking temperature. If you are going skiing or just out on the town, this mug will keep your coffee warm throughout your whole day.

What did I NOT like about this product?

While the Fellow Products Wide Mug is one of the best travel mugs on the market today, it fails badly in one department: drinking coffee while driving. The Wide Mug requires two hands to unscrew its signature lid to access the fantastic wide mouth.

This great feature, however, hinders the ability to use your coffee mug while driving safely. The only option in this regard is to leave the lid off while going; however, you risk splashing coffee into your cup holders or onto your infotainment center. They did release a variation of this coffee mug, called the Move Mug, to fix this issue (Paid Link). However, I still have some concerns about it.

Has this product changed over the years?

The design of the Carter Wide Mug has stayed the same since its release in 2019. However, the marketing of the mug has! On its release, this was the only travel mug from Fellow Products, and it was named the Carter Everywhere Mug.

Since its release, they have expanded its lineup to include the Carter Move Mug, Carter Slide Mug, Carter 360 Mug, and more. The new names used themes that discussed their features rather than benefits. Fellow Products then aptly adjusted the Carter Everywhere Mug to being the Carter Wide Mug to display its wide-mouth feature better.

Final Thoughts

The Fellow Products Wide Mug is likely the best coffee mug on the market for anyone who doesn’t need it while driving. If you sit in the driver’s seat infrequently, the mouthfeel, build quality, styling, and ability to keep your coffee warm are similar to this coffee mug.

If you are someone that does drive often, you should either consider their Move Mug (Paid Link) or look elsewhere entirely.
