The Ekster Key Case Works Well, But Has Quirks

I get tired of keys making endless noise, whether in a pocket while walking or in a vehicle’s ignition while driving down the road. The constant rattle, even though we get used to it, can be so irritating, and the worst part is that sometimes we don’t even realize where the agitation we feel is coming from.

Not to mention the unorganized ball of keys that don’t sit well in a pocket or backpack can look and feel uncomfortable.

I’ve tested and used several different key organizers and key ring setups, and so now testing the Key Case from Ekster is a welcome change. I was gifted the Key Case from Ekster, and for the past two weeks, I’ve been putting it through a thorough review. I am going to give you my honest opinion about my experience with it.

To start, let’s take a look at what it is meant to do, what it’s made of, and finally, what features it offers. The Key Case from Ekster is meant to be a smarter key storage system (Paid Link). Where you can keep your keys organized and your key chaos minimized.

Ekster boasts that it offers both fast one-handed key access with slim organization, sustainable materials, and a lifetime warranty. It’s made from space-grade 6061–T6 aluminum or with LWG premium leather.

It holds 2 to 8 keys and includes a detachable D ring for larger keys. It currently comes in a variety of colors and with extra add-ons that are a part of the larger ecosystem, such as the Finder Tag or the Extra Card Holder Pro.

What do I like about this key organizer?

1. It’s easy to install and keep accessory attachments

Adding key fobs, AirTags, gym passes, and a variety of other things that I’ve used or attached to my key organizers has been difficult at times. Ekster did a great job with the detachable D Loop. It holds items securely, doesn’t slide around on the key case, and yet can still be removed easily if you don’t need it.

The loop is large enough to still allow attachments to fit. The D ring sits securely at the end of the key organizer, making it more comfortable to carry in hand or in a pocket.

2. This key organizer looks great

Beyond how well or quietly it holds your keys, I really enjoy the overall look and feel of this key case. The metals are smooth with subtle but noticeable branding. It matches extremely well with other extra products. The quality of materials is noticed in both its durability and feel. I cannot speak to the leather version because I don’t have it, but this one looks and feels really good.

3. Finally, a good way to keep your keys silent in your pocket

I have used various key organizers, including the Jibbon and Orbit key organizers, and this is where I think Ekster beats them all.  When I say silence, I mean zero noise from keys. The gaskets that go between each key ensure complete silence; no keys are clanging or slapping about.

This one definitely lives up to Ekster’s claim (Paid Link), and it is an enjoyable feature that does not disappoint. This one definitely lives up to Eksters’ claim. It is an enjoyable feature that does not disappoint.

What do I not like about this Key Case?

1. It’s kinda difficult to set up

There are some things about the key case that I do not like, and the first thing that comes to mind is the difficult setup. To be fair, every key organizer that I have used is a little bit tricky to set up; some are easier than others, and some are ridiculously difficult.

This one is definitely more on the difficult side. I’m currently carrying about five keys, and getting it set up is a little frustrating because between each key is a gasket, so you have to somehow keep all of the correct holes in line until all of your keys are in place, and then push the threaded screw through. Once it’s in place, no problem, but changing it can be quite difficult with the gaskets you have to use.

2. It has too many extra pieces to keep around

I have never been one to keep original packaging, and I find it very difficult to hold onto miscellaneous parts of a product for future use that I’m not going to use immediately, at least with items like key organizers. I reviewed the key organizer from the Distil Union and did not like the extra pieces I had to hold onto if I wanted to swap out keys.

It’s the same with this key case. They send enough gaskets to carry up to eight keys; however, I’m not using that many, so I now have to store extra gaskets if I want to use them if I add more keys.

The other extra piece to keep is the adjuster tool for the tension. It’s a small, round disc. It looks like a flat, round battery, and it’s what you use to tighten or loosen the keys; however, I don’t like having to carry parts around to make those adjustments.

3. The hard edges are annoying

While I admit this is a personal preference, I don’t like the hard square edges because I don’t want to have wear marks in my clothes due to carrying keys in my pocket.

I’m confident others couldn’t care less about this, but I personally don’t like wallets or key organizers that add a lot of bulk or wear through a pocket over time, not to mention if I put it in backpack pockets with other electronics, it can be hard on the backpack and whatever else I’m carrying with it.

Who is the Ekster Key Case for?

People who want simplicity (Paid Link). Other than the setup, the Key Case from Ekster is a great product for anybody who wants to simplify how they carry their keys. If you have built up a key ring of unnecessary items that are non-essential, this key organizer is going to help you minimize and organize them simply and functionally.

One of the great things about key organizers is that they truly limit what you can put on them, forcing you to decide what is essential and what is not.

Organizers (Paid Link). If you feel like I did before key organizers, and are tired of your key ring system being unruly, noisy, and frustrating, then this is a great product for you. It’s gonna help you organize and help you prioritize what you carry. Our keys go virtually everywhere with us and are on our person all the time.  So what is attached to them really does matter.

Who shouldn’t buy this key organizer?

The Minimalists. Not every product is right for every person, so let’s talk about who should not purchase this product. If you are not interested in storing the extra tools because you want to keep things organized and minimal, then you may want to look at some other options. Check out our review of Orbit or Jibbon key organizers.

Bottom-dollar budget seekers. If you want to organize your keys, but you are unwilling to spend more than $10 for it, then you’re going to want to look somewhere else. I recognize that many people would just never spend this much money on their keys, at least not when you can buy a 50 Cent key ring from your local store and be on your way.

While there are many more expensive key organizers on the market, this is also not the least expensive. It does sit at a mid-tier price point. If you are willing to spend a bit of cash for a high-quality, well-trusted key organizer, then go for it, but if that’s simply out of your world, and for some it is, this is not going to be for you.
