The Fenix HT30R is AMAZING! But might be too bright for its own good?

Here we have the Fenix HT30R White Laser Flashlight. This flashlight is the epitome of brightness and is designed to throw an intense beam of light long distances, and can shine a light for almost a mile.

It has the ability to charge the battery while the light is on as well, and it can be used with some accessories from Fenix to make this light truly a great tool. This thing is the real deal, and I’m so excited that Fenix gifted it out to us to review.

The Fenix HT30R is a high output, low spill-over class 1 laser flashlight with a hyper spot beam pattern. This is a battery-powered USB-C recharging unit with an integrated waterproof and dustproof twist-type charging access port.

This light is a ‘low’ lumen ‘high’ candela flashlight with an all-metal construction. This light also features a two-button tail switch with an on/off and a high/low button; the high-low button also is how you activate the strobe function when the light is off.

Just in case your aren’t aware, lumens (lm) and candelas (cd) are photometric units that measure different aspects of light. Lumens quantify the total visible light emitted by a source in all directions, reflecting its brightness.

In contrast, candelas measure the intensity of light in a specific direction, focusing on luminous intensity based on the angle of emission. Essentially, lumens assess total light output, while candelas describe directed light intensity.)

What do I like about this Fenix flashlight?

1. This thing is crazy bright.

It’s bright! Even on the lowest setting, the HT30R does not slouch on the brightness; it’s only rated for 500 lumens, but it packs a whopping 600,000 candle power. That’s right, we didn’t add an extra zero. The average car’s high beams are only 50,000.

So this light is like having 12-car high beams in the palm of your hand. I have never used a light with this much power; the ultra-tight spot pattern is the key to the outstanding performance of this unit; the light pattern is so small that it is more like a laser pointer than a flashlight up close, but it does have a great light pattern past 150 feet.

2. It’s built very well.

This thing (Paid Link) is definitely well constructed, this light is well built, with high quality materials. The body and tail cap are made of aluminum and the switches are made of industrial grade rubber to keep the light functioning for many years to come.

3. The flashlight is easy to charge.

Charging is a breeze with the integrated charging port, which is located under the lens cap at the front of the light.  The battery will charge quickly and hold a charge for a long time; the run time is super good on the low setting while still running for a long time.

You can also take the battery out and replace it if you are out in the field and do not have a way to charge it.

What do I NOT like about this laser flashlight?

1. Is it possibly too bright?

As much as the beam pattern is a plus for this light, it’s also a bit of a drawback, this light is made for seeing a long distance, but if you try to use it like a normal light to see just in your immediate area, under 100 feet the beam is so intense you can’t see anything… so if you want one light to do it all, this is definitely not it.

2. Battery life is lacking at top brightness.

The battery is a good battery, but if you want to use this light for long distances (which is what it excels at), the battery won’t last long at all.

In fact, it has a maximum brightness that is only attainable for 3-5 minutes before the brightness starts to degrade. I would like to see the max output last longer and be at the rated 500 lumens for more than a few minutes, this light is for high output and for seeing a long distance.

Who should buy the Fenix HT30R?

If you are in the business of needing to see a long distance, maybe you work as a first responder who is looking for a missing person, or maybe you have livestock you need to check on in the middle of the night, then you will like this flashlight.

If you are looking for a light that you can use every day to find something you dropped outside or maybe you are walking in the early morning, then you will not want to buy this light. It has a very specific purpose, and that is to see a long distance with a very nice spot pattern.
